Spain

The city of Madrid during sunsetThe second largest country in the European Union, Spain occupies 85% of the Iberian Peninsula, sharing the remainder with Portugal. This is a country that is wonderfully diverse, both in terms of culture and natural beauty, making it no surprise that Spain is the second most-visited country in the world, receiving over eight million visitors a year.

One thing that sets Spain apart from other European countries is its decentralized democracy. There are 17 official regions in Spain, and each one is responsible for managing that region’s hospitals, schools, transport and other public services. Over the years, Spain’s economy has developed quite rapidly. In addition to tourism providing the country with a huge economic boost, Spain is also a leader when it comes to textiles, machinery, cars, food, and so much more. In fact, not only is Spain the world’s largest producer of olive oil, but it is also a leader in terms of wine, certain vegetables and almonds.

Spain’s geography is extremely varied, with a large portion of the country consisting of a dry and broad plateau that sits about half a mile above sea level and is surrounded by mountain ranges and rivers. This creates wonderfully rich soils in the plateau, making it ideal for agriculture. Towards the north of the country, the climate turns milder and wetter, resulting in dense forests and lush greenery. The south and the east are Spain’s Mediterranean coasts. Palm trees and other tropical plants, coupled with warm winds that keep the coast balmy, mean that you often end up seeing more tourists than locals along this part of Spain.

Thanks to its prime location between Africa and Europe, Spain has always provided important habitats for several different wildlife species. Due to pollution and deforestation putting these creature at risk, the country has now created a number of wildlife refuges and national parks. Sierra Nevada in Andalucia is the largest, with 20 mountain peaks located within, while the cliffs, waterfalls and seclusion of the Caldera de Taburiente will make you feel as though you have entered into Jurassic Park.

Of course, Spain’s cities, with their beautiful balance of old and new, are just as important. Seville is the capital of Andalucia, and is famous for its music scene, while Barcelona is renowned for its architecture, especially Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia. Granada may be slightly lesser-known, but this is where you will find the Alhambra Palace, which is one of the great wonders of the world. Madrid, which is the caital of Spain, boasts cobbled streets, historic museums, and the oldest restaurant in the world, which has been running since 1725.

Speaking of food, this is something that plays a huge role in Spanish culture. Most bars in Spain are also restaurants, and restaurants are also bars, highlighting the love that the Spanish have for eating, drinking and socializing. From paella to tapas to fresh seafood, the food in Spain is absolutely exquisite. Thanks to the Mediterranean diet being one of the healthiest in the world, you don’t need to feel guilty about indulging in all of this delicious local cuisine either!
