Surprising Causes Of Skin Irritation In Your Hotel

When you’re traveling, staying in a hotel can be a fun experience, but did you know that doing so might cause you to have skin irritation? This isn’t meant to scare you or dissuade you from staying in a hotel, but being aware and taking precautions are a way to help ensure that your vacation doesn’t result in you scratching away at your skin or heading to a medical facility for treatment. Before you book your next vacation, let’s discuss some of the ways that you could experience skin irritation at your hotel.

Bed Bugs
These gross little creatures could very well be hiding in your hotel room and not only can they cause irritation to your skin, but they could also hitch a ride back with you and take up residence in your home if you’re not careful. Check everywhere that has a soft surface – from the mattress to the carpet edging to the upholstered chair – and until you’re sure that there are no bed bugs in your hotel room, don’t put your luggage on any soft surface. Don’t forget to do your research on the hotel beforehand to see if there have been any recent bed bug reports that may be cause for concern.

Complimentary Toiletries
It’s nice that the hotel is giving you complimentary toiletries, but you’re probably not sure how your skin is going to react to them unless you’ve used them before. If you insist on using them, make sure you do a patch test first, but you’re likely better off just forgoing them and using your own. Forgot to bring them? Ask the concierge where there’s a store nearby where you can pick some up.

Linens
Some laundry detergents could cause irritation, which means when you use the towels or sleep on the sheets, you might see the after effects on your skin. If you have skin sensitivities, call up the hotel and explain the situation and see what they can do. There are hotels that will be willing to accommodate those who call up ahead of time.

Breakfast Buffet
Wait, the breakfast buffet? If you’re allergic to certain foods, such as eggs, even sometimes touching the food can be enough to cause an allergic reaction in the form of a rash, hives, etc. If you know you already have allergies to certain foods, check out the breakfast buffet to make sure there’s not anything present that could cause you to have a reaction. Additionally, if you’re thinking of ordering room service, let them know of your allergies to ensure there’s not going to be a problem with your food.

When you do your research, such as finding out which hotels can accommodate those who have skin sensitivities, it can allow you to make educated decisions about which options would be best for you. You don’t want a health issue ruining your good time! As previously stated, the aforementioned isn’t meant to scare you, but it’s important that you’re prepared so you can increase your chances of having a fantastic vacation with as few worries as possible.
