Tips for Planning Your Family Vacation

Travel planning

Planning a family vacation can be a completely nerve-wracking experience. You want to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible not only with the planning process but with the vacation itself. So how exactly do you go about making that happen? Keep reading for tips on how to do just that.

Figure Out Your Budget
Unless you have an unlimited budget to work with, chances are you’re going to consider money an important factor in planning your family vacation. Before you figure out where you want or when to go, think about how much your budget is so you have a good starting point.

Work Together on a Location
Although you have the ultimate decision on where you go for your family vacation, it doesn’t hurt to get opinions from the kids on where they want to go, especially if they’re older. They could provide good insight on a particular location or attraction you may have not previously considered.

Review Time and Cost-Cutting Measures
Once you’ve decided where you want to go for your family vacation, it’s time to figure out ways to maximize your time and cut costs. For example, if you’re thinking of going to Disney World, you might want to look into getting a MagicBand which offers a whole variety of perks. Many places now have options that allow you to cut lines, get discounts, go when there are no crowds, etc, so it could make your trip a more pleasant experience.

Make a List of Musts
Make a list of things you want to do when you get to your destination. Chances are there are going to be many things on the list than what you actually have time for, but that’s where organizing by importance comes in. At the top of the list, put the attractions that you absolutely must see, and toward the bottom put ones that you’ll be happy if you get to but could do without. This allows you to prioritize your time and money more efficiently.

Go During Off-Season
You can’t always choose your vacation time – sometimes you just have to go when school or work gives you the time – but if you can take your family vacation during the off-season, it could help you save quite a bit of money not to mention decrease the chances you’ll have to deal with big crowds. If you’ve picked a place but not the dates as of yet, do your research to see when their off-season is.

Don’t Jam-Pack Your Schedule
Of course, you want to see as many attractions as possible, but if you jam-pack your schedule, it’s going to overwhelm you and you’re going to stress yourself out. If something happens to throw off your schedule a bit, such as a late plane or bad weather, it could knock all of your plans out of whack. Give yourself some space in between so you have some time to work with if you need it.

Plan Alternative Options
If only beautiful weather were guaranteed every day of family vacation. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Depending on where you’re going, some attractions may shut down for the day or it’s just not someplace you want to go when there’s rain falling on your head. When you’re making your list of things you want to do, make sure you plan for alternative places to go just in case it rains so you’re not stuck scrounging around for things to do.

When you’re planning your family vacation, the best thing you can do is just breathe. Everything may not go perfectly, but what matters most is the people you’re traveling with and having a good time together. At the end of the day, it’s all about the happy memories you make.
