Can’t Miss Topography: Maltese Islands

Located in the center of the Mediterranean are what is known as the Maltese Islands, a beautiful archipelago that consists of several islands, but the three largest (and the ones that are inhabited) are Malta, Comino, and Gozo. Malta is the largest, followed by Gozo, then Comino. On 316 square kilometers, there are over 400,000 residents as well as numerous things to see and do. The following is just a taste of the topography that you’ll get to experience when you visit the Maltese Islands.

Azure Window
Located on Gozo, the Azure Window is a natural arch that’s comprised of limestone and beautifully showcases the scenery beyond it. It got its name from the dark blue water that surrounds and goes through it. It’s an incredibly popular spot for diving. As breathtaking as it is, the 328-foot-high window is getting worn, and it’s believed that it will eventually collapse.

Xlendi Bay Beach
Xlendi Bay Beach, which is located in Gozo, is a small, sandy beach yet one that provides incredible views from the cliffs. It’s peaceful and quiet, and considering there are more than 300 days per year when the sun is shining, there are plenty of opportunities to do some exploring, swimming, or snorkeling, or just grab a good book and relax in the sand.

Tarxien Temples
Let’s head over to southern Malta where you’ll find the Tarxien Temples which were constructed between 3600 and 2500 B.C. Evidence found at the site indicates that rituals took place at the megalithic structures and later on during the Bronze Age the site was reportedly used as a cremation cemetery. Despite being around for quite a long time, the site wasn’t discovered until 1913 when farmers came upon the Tarxien Temples by accident. During the next few years, the site was excavated and four temples were unearthed. In 1980, it was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2012, an elevated walkway was finished to give visitors a better viewpoint of the area.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
The Maltese Islands are essentially a must-visit for those who want to go scuba diving and snorkeling. Between the clear waters, breathtaking scenery, interesting caves, and marine life, you’ll want to explore as much of the area as possible. From Comino to Gozo to Malta, you’ll also have plenty of places from which to choose. The Maltese Islands can provide you with the beauty and tranquility that you desire, and whether you want to explore what the islands have to offer, float in the water, or just want to plant yourself in the sand, it will undoubtedly be an experience you won’t soon forget.

Blue Lagoon
The little island of Comino has its own exquisite spot that’s a must-see. The Blue Lagoon features clear waters and white sand and is simply a tiny piece of paradise. You can reach Comino by ferry, but be prepared for the tranquility. There are no cars on the island, which is a nature reserve and a bird sanctuary, and there are only four permanent residents.
