Choosing Healthy Meals While You Travel
When you’re traveling, it can be difficult to always stay on track and go for healthy meal options. With the availability of not-so-good-for-you foods, combined with constantly being on the go in an unfamiliar locale, it’s often easier to pick any foods that are just right there and within reach. However, choosing healthy meals while you travel is actually a lot easier than one may think, and the following are some ideas for how you can go about it.
Review the Menus Ahead of Time
If there are some restaurants you have in mind that you’d like to visit, check out their menus ahead of time. This is convenient for a whole slew of reasons, one of which is that it will allow you to take your time to review the options and weigh the pros and cons of what would be better for you. Why not just do this in a restaurant? It’s easy to feel pressured or rushed – especially when you’re hungry – to just go with something that immediately catches your eye, which may not necessarily be the healthiest choice on the menu.
Get Personal Recommendations
Social media is excellent for getting personal recommendations for where to eat and what to order if you’re heading to a particular destination. Put the word out that you’re going to be visiting and ask if anyone has any suggestions for eateries to visit and healthy dishes you must try. Once you have some ideas, you can follow that up by reviewing their menus.
Read the Ingredients
Even if a dish sounds healthy, it doesn’t mean it is. For example, a salad is a good option, right? Not necessarily. If it’s loaded with cheese and a heavy calorie-laden dressing, there’s probably something else that’s a better choice. Review the ingredients of the dishes you’re thinking of getting, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask before you order.
Bring Your Own
When you travel, one of the best things you can do so you know that what you’re eating is healthy is to bring your own food. This doesn’t mean you can’t dine out at restaurants, all it means is that you also have snacks and small meals on hand, such as hard-boiled eggs and almonds, that are healthy, filling and delicious.
Opt for a Kitchen and Mini-fridge
When you’re traveling and you don’t have access to a fridge or a kitchen where you’re staying, it can complicate things a little more. For example, if you have healthy leftovers from a restaurant that you could easily bring back with you and have for lunch the next day, you’re going to have to pass on taking them since you have nowhere to put them. Having access to a kitchen also means you could cook your own food if you’d rather not eat out. When possible, opt for staying somewhere that gives you access to a kitchen or at least a mini-fridge.
The aforementioned are only some of the ways that you can keep eating healthy even while you’re traveling. There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself, but it’s all about balance and moderation. Regardless of where you’re traveling to, planning in advance could do wonders.
