Learning About Cultural Etiquette When Visiting Macau

One of the biggest mistakes you can make as a tourist is assuming that the destination you’re heading to is going to require the same cultural etiquette as where you live. Some people will forgive an accidental faux pas while others might not be so understanding especially depending on the situation in which the error was made. If you’re thinking of heading to Macau, you’re going to want to brush up on the cultural etiquette before you even start packing. Let’s discuss how you can go about learning more before your trip to the fabulous locale.

Do Your Research
Doing your research for your trip to Macau is an absolute must. Cultural etiquette is different all over the world, so you’re going to want to take the time to learn about what it’s like where you’re going. You’ll especially want to pay attention to what you’ll need to know according to what you’re planning on doing. For example, if you’re going for a business meeting, learn the ins and outs of business etiquette as well as dining etiquette.

Ask for Advice from the Public
If you want to learn more about the cultural etiquette in Macau, don’t hesitate to ask. There are numerous helpful websites out there that offer a public forum where you can make a post and ask for the information you need, such as what you should wear to a specific location or about the proper gifts to bring.

Request Information from Family and Friends
One of the best uses of social media is asking for suggestions from family and friends, so when you’re planning your trip to Macau, reach out and ask if anyone has some advice for you for your visit. Whether they can give you advice or know someone who can, it’s a good opportunity to put yourself out there and get some input.

Learn Some Phrases
If you’re going to Macau, you can’t assume that everyone is just going to be able to speak the same language as you. The official languages in Macau are Portuguese and Chinese, so if you’re going there speaking a different language with the assumption that you’ll be able to easily communicate, it won’t be so simple. To be able to communicate easier, start brushing up on helpful and necessary phrases.

Pack Appropriately
You’re going to want to be dressed appropriately when you’re visiting Macau especially depending on what you’re doing, and it’s important to note that many places have dress codes. If there are certain places you’re planning on visiting, looking up the respective dress codes is easy, but you’ll also want to prepare for unexpected plans as well just in case.

Be Careful of What you Say
As we all know, there are gestures, words, and phrases that might be fine to use in one part of the world but not in another as it could be considered offensive. For example, cursing in jest at someone back home might not be a big deal to you, but saying certain phrases at someone in Macau—and no, we’re not going to post them here—could be considered extremely offensive. However, do your research and be mindful of what you say and you shouldn’t have a problem.

If the aforementioned seems overwhelming and intimidating, don’t worry. As previously stated, doing research is essential, and the more you do, the better off you’ll be.
