Surfing in the USA

Those who love surfing know there’s nothing quite like gliding across the water. It’s an experience like no other; it gets the adrenaline going and there’s this feeling of being connected to nature. You also can’t beat the combination of salt water, sandy beaches, and the sun shining down. Don’t worry if you have little-to-no experience with surfing; surfing spots typically have people ready to teach you exactly what to do. If you’re interested in getting into surfing or you’re looking to find new places to surf, you may want to consider checking out the following four spots.

New Smyrna Beach

New Smyrna Beach
This well-known surfing spot in Florida offers consistent surf, and late summer/early fall is usually the best time to go. New Smyrna Beach has a population of around 23,000. Whenever you go, just make sure to keep an eye out for sharks. Temperatures typically allow for year-round surfing although winter is the coldest time. Want to see what the waves are like? Malibu

Malibu
The small beautiful little town in California has a population of about 13,000 and typically has the warmest water temperature around the beginning of September with the coolest being in the beginning of February. Take note that it can get really crowded; the best time to surf in Malibu is usually in late summer and in fall. Surfrider Beach and Zuma Beach are two of the most popular areas to go. Montauk

Montauk
New York for surfing? Absolutely. Whether you go to Camp Hero, Turtle Cove, or one of Montauk’s other spots, Montauk is a popular surfing location that’s set at the end of Long Island. Conditions can be inconsistent so there’s a lot of variety. Late summer and into fall is typically a great time to surf in Montauk. The average water temperature in September is about 67.4°F, but that’s nothing compared to how cold it can get in January when the average water temperature is 41.2°F.

Haleiwa

Haleiwa
The North Shore city in O’ahu, Hawaii, has a very small population at only around 4,000 people, but it can get crowded with many surfers taking advantage of the incredible surf conditions, especially in winter. Don’t forget to watch out for the reefs. Did we mention that the Seven Mile Miracle starts at Haleiwa? If you’re looking to be challenged, Haleiwa is definitely a good place to surf.

If you are new to surfing, one of the most important things you should do before you even get yourself on a board is to familiarize yourself with surfing etiquette. For example, you always want to hold onto your board. It’s important to know surfing etiquette, not just so you don’t annoy someone else but also because one wrong move could put your life or someone else’s life in danger. If you’re going to surf, it’s vital that you respect other surfers as well as the beach and ocean.
